WILBER SHAW No 2 Car: Boyle Special; motor Itialian Maserati. Age 28, Indianapolis native living in Akron, OH. First raced at Indy in 1927, finished fourth. In
1928 forced out at 107 miles; in 1930 at 143 miles; In 1933 finished second; in 1934 went out at 37 miles; in 1935 second again; in 1936 finished seventh; in 1937 and 1939 he won; was second in 1938. Won
again last year. Qualified this year at 127.836. Works for firestone. |

GEORGE ROBSON NO 10 Car: Leon Duray Sppecial; motor Duray. Age 32; home Huntington Park, Calif. Qualified at 116.305 mph in 1939 to become an alternate but did not
start, since all 33 cars were able to get to the line. Last year forced out at 168 miles with a broken shock absorber. Qualified this year at 121.576 but broke a connecting rod on the 67th lap. |

MERRIL "DOC" WILLIAMS NO 36 Car; Indiana Fur Special; motor, Miller. Age 30 from Indiana. first came to Indy in 1933 driving a converted Ford,
failed to qualify. Finished 13th in 1934. Crashed during practice in 1935. In 1936 ran out of gas after 492 1/2 miles. In 1937 didn't start. in 1938 didn't qualify; in 1939 didn't start. Last year
forced out with a broken oil line at 153 miles. Qualified this year at 124.014 but went out on the 69th lap with a broken valve. |

BILLY DeVORE NO 23 Car: Pay Day Special, motor Offenhauser. Age 29 from Indianapolis, son of the late great racer Earl DeVore. First run at Indy in 1937, finished
7th; in 1938 finished eighth; in 1939 finished 10th. Last year was flagged down after Shaw had won. Qualified this year at 121.770 but threw a rod on the stretch in te 122nd lap and skidded
to a stop. |
